I am very grateful and deeply honored when people say that my YouTube video “It Could Happen To You” has helped push equality forward in 2012. Most of my life I was ashamed of being gay, and I was afraid to stand up for myself. But, it wasn’t until I lost Tom, the love of my life, that I finally found the courage to speak up for what I truly believe in. I will no longer give people the power to make me feel like I’m less of a person just because I am different.
After I posted my YouTube video, I received thousands of hateful messages. I was told I should kill myself and that I was going to hell. Fortunately, the messages of love, support and encouragement far outnumbered the negative voices. Words do cause pain at times, but nothing has been more painful than losing Tom, and I owe it to him to do whatever I can to help make marriage possible for all committed couples who share the same love that we did.
People say we should be happy with the progress that has been made, and that’s true, but I just wish that Tom and I would’ve been able to get married before he died. No one should have to wait. It was our dream to get married and, for that very reason, I owe it to him and the millions of people who share that dream, and are as deserving as any couple.
